It’s time for culture & art

The Vinschgau Valley cultural region still has traces of earlier times, even of antiquity. Especially in the surroundings of the Garni Appartements Almrausch you will find many contemporary witnesses: castles, monasteries, medieval towns… and also museums which reflect the history of the valley.

We are happy to show you some tips for your culturally interesting holiday in Burgeis in the Upper Vinschgau Valley.

Marienberg Abbey

The Marienberg Abbey, which lies in direct proximity of the Garni Appartements Almrausch, above Burgeis, is a place of peace. A place of power with very special Romanesque crypt frescoes. In addition, it is the highest Benedictine abbey in Europe, where monks still live. The highest vineyard in the Alps can also be admired on the slopes.

Churburg Castle

Churburg Castle near Schluderns is one of the best preserved castles in South Tyrol. With its armoury and fairytale arcade, it impresses numerous guests and locals every year. Once a year, the well-known South Tyrolean Knights’ Games take place in the castle of the Trapp family, which are especially popular with families with children.

Glurns town

The charming town of Glurns with its 900 inhabitants is the smallest town in South Tyrol. A gem with medieval arcades, stately mansions, towers and stately churches. Especially the annual Advent market attracts many visitors from near and far.

Stilfser Joch National Park

The national park around the Ortler-Cevedale Group is one of the largest nature reserves in the Alpine region. Here majestic peaks and glacier formations meet green forests and rushing torrents. Rare plants meet wild animals. In short: the Stilfser Joch National Park has many alpine climate zones and it is precisely these that make it so unique.

Museums

A highlight for those interested in culture are the Messner Mountain Museums by mountain climbing legend Reinhold Messner. Two of a total of six museums are located in the Vinschgau Valley. The Messner Mountain Museum Ortles is located in Sulden am Ortler, the Messner Mountain Museum Juval at the entrance of the Schnalstal Valley, near Naturns. The one in Sulden am Ortler is dedicated to glaciers and ice, while the one at Juval Castle focuses on the myth of the mountain.
